I don’t think we talk enough about how loud life has become.
Not just physically loud, mentally loud.
Notifications, constant opinions, background noise, scrolling while watching something while replying to messages while thinking about twelve other things at the same time.
And after a while, you stop feeling calm in your own mind.
You start feeling scattered. Irritated. Weirdly exhausted even when you haven’t technically “done” much.
I’ve realized that feeling overstimulated isn’t always about needing a complete reset.
Sometimes it’s just about creating a little more space between you and the noise.
These are a few things that genuinely help me feel calmer and more like myself again.
1. stop consuming something every second
This one changed a lot for me.
I used to fill every quiet moment automatically:
music, podcasts, TikTok, YouTube, texting, background TV.
And I didn’t realize how little silence my brain was actually getting.
Now I try to leave small pockets of the day uninterrupted.
Driving without anything playing. Walking without scrolling. Making coffee without immediately reaching for my phone.
At first it feels uncomfortable.
Then it starts feeling peaceful.
2. make your environment softer
Your nervous system responds to your surroundings more than you think.
Harsh lighting, clutter, constant noise, too many tabs open, it all adds up.
Small things help:
- lamps instead of overhead lights
- opening windows
- tidying one small area
- slowing down music
- candles
- clean sheets
- less visual chaos
You don’t need a perfect Pinterest apartment.
Just an environment that lets your body relax a little.
3. spend less time reacting
I think overstimulation often comes from constantly reacting.
To messages. Emails. Content. News. Opinions. Notifications.
You wake up and immediately enter response mode.
And after a while, it feels like your brain doesn’t belong to you anymore.
Now I try to create moments where I’m leading my attention instead of constantly giving it away.
Even tiny boundaries help:
- not checking my phone immediately
- taking longer to reply sometimes
- going outside before scrolling
- reading instead of consuming short-form content
Your attention is energy.
Protecting it changes everything.
4. reconnect with physical things
When I feel mentally overloaded, I try to do things that bring me back into my body and surroundings.
Stretching. Cooking. Walking. Making tea. Journaling. Sitting in the sun. Washing my sheets. Going near the ocean.
Simple things.
Not because they “fix” everything, but because they interrupt the constant mental noise.
They remind you that life is still happening outside your screen and your thoughts.
5. let yourself be bored sometimes
This is probably the hardest one.
We’re so used to constant stimulation that boredom feels wrong now.
But boredom is often where creativity, clarity, and calm actually begin.
Not every second needs to be filled.
You don’t always need input.
Sometimes your brain just needs room to breathe again.
Maybe you’re just overstimulated.
Maybe your mind has been carrying too much noise for too long.
And maybe feeling better starts with smaller things than you think:
less input, slower moments, softer routines, more presence.
Not escaping your life.
Just experiencing it a little more gently.
