eat your skincare: papaya edition

I’m very much a skincare girl (omg, that sounded very cringe lol)

Give me the serums. Give me the face masks. Give me the unnecessarily luxurious moisturizer that makes bedtime feel like an event.

But the more I’ve learned about skin, the more I’ve realized that skincare doesn’t exclusively happen in the bathroom.

Some of it happens in the kitchen.

And today’s skincare product is…

Papaya.

Yes, the fruit.

No, I’m not suggesting you abandon your SPF and start rubbing papaya on your forehead.

I’m talking about eating it.

Papaya is one of those foods that quietly contains a pretty impressive combination of nutrients that support normal skin health, including vitamin C, vitamin A precursors and antioxidants.

And conveniently, it’s also delicious.

Especially cold with fresh lime squeezed over it.

So, let’s get into why I’m currently considering papaya edible skincare.

1. Vitamin C is doing a lot behind the scenes

When we talk about vitamin C and skin, we usually think about serums.

But your body also needs vitamin C through your diet.

Vitamin C is required for your body to make collagen, the structural protein that helps give skin its strength and support.

It’s also an antioxidant, meaning it helps protect cells against oxidative stress.

Papaya happens to be naturally rich in vitamin C.

And I love thinking about skincare this way because it shifts the conversation away from trying to “fix” your skin externally.

Your skin is an organ.

It needs nutrients too.

A serum can be a lovely part of your routine, but so can breakfast.

2. Papaya contains beta-carotene

That gorgeous orange colour isn’t just there to make your breakfast look aesthetically pleasing.

Papaya contains carotenoids, including beta-carotene, which your body can convert into vitamin A.

Vitamin A plays an important role in normal skin-cell growth and maintenance.

Again, this doesn’t mean eating papaya is going to wake you up tomorrow with completely different skin.

Nutrition doesn’t really work like that.

It’s much less dramatic, and much more interesting.

Eating a varied diet consistently gives your body the building blocks it needs to do all the boring behind-the-scenes work that eventually shows up in how you feel, function and, yes, sometimes how your skin looks.

3. Antioxidants are basically your skin’s backup team

Your skin deals with a lot.

Sun exposure.

Pollution.

Stress.

Normal metabolic processes happening inside your body.

All of these can contribute to oxidative stress, where unstable molecules called free radicals can damage cells.

Your body has its own antioxidant defense systems, and antioxidant-rich foods help provide nutrients involved in that protection.

Papaya contains vitamin C and several carotenoids, making it another easy way to add antioxidant-rich foods into your diet.

Does this mean papaya replaces sunscreen?

Absolutely not.

SPF remains employed.

Think of nutrition as part of the bigger picture rather than an alternative to skincare.

4. And then there’s papain

Papaya also contains an enzyme called papain, which helps break proteins down into smaller components.

That’s why papaya has traditionally been associated with digestion and why papain is sometimes used as a meat tenderizer.

I find the digestion-skin connection interesting because wellness loves separating everything into categories.

Skin over here.

Gut over there.

Sleep somewhere else.

But your body isn’t operating in departments.

Eating enough nutrients, staying hydrated, sleeping properly, managing stress and supporting normal digestion all contribute to your overall health.

Your skin doesn’t exist separately from the rest of you.

How I’m eating it

My preferred method requires approximately zero culinary talent.

Cold papaya.

Fresh lime.

That’s it.

The lime cuts through the sweetness and makes the whole thing taste ridiculously refreshing.

You could also add papaya to yoghurt with chia seeds, throw it into a smoothie, pair it with berries, or add it to a tropical fruit bowl.

But honestly?

Papaya + lime on a hot day is elite.

No notes.

Eat your skincare, but keep your actual skincare

I think this is the part of the wellness conversation that’s often missing.

You don’t need to choose between nutrition and skincare.

I’m doing both.

I’m eating the papaya.

I’m applying the vitamin C serum.

I’m wearing the SPF.

I’m drinking the water.

I’m attempting to get enough sleep.

Because good skin is rarely the result of one miracle ingredient.

It’s usually a combination of genetics, hormones, environment, skincare, nutrition, sleep, stress and approximately a million other tiny factors.

And I actually find that comforting.

You don’t need to obsess over one perfect food.

Just eat a varied, nourishing diet that gives your body plenty to work with.

Papaya can simply be one delicious part of it.

So yes, I’m still spending money on skincare.

But I’m also eating it.

And this week’s serum happens to come with a squeeze of lime.
